Welcome...  I am Deborah Barkowsky. Thank you for visiting our site. I am a clinical counsellor with specialization in neuropsychology. There are many definitions of, and beliefs about, holistic healing and I think it is important to share this model's definition.  The areas of mind, emotions, body and spirit are presented below with my interpretations of each.  However, please remember as you read they do not exist or function individually.  While they are presented this way for ease of understanding, the mind, emotions, body and spirit are interrelated processes that form us as human beings.

... When they learn to see the difference between their thoughts and feelings, they can develop an understanding of why they feel and interpret things the way they do, and how their actions and behaviours express that interpretation.... When they learn to see the difference between their thoughts and feelings, they can develop an understanding of why they feel and interpret things the way they do, and how their actions and behaviours express that interpretation.... As we work on healing the emotional parts of an individual, we help them understand their feelings, many of which are strongly related/connected to their past.... Growing up in a violent, abusive, abandoning environment affects every aspect of a person’s mental, emotional, physical and spiritual life.  In our model abandonment includes not only instances where caregivers leave the family, but emotional (and psychological) abandonment such as growing up with addicted parents (alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc.), being verbally abused, witnessing fighting between parents, sexual abuse, spiritual abuse, and poverty. The reason for this is because all forms of violence, abuse and abandonment create an environment where children grow up feeling unloved, uncared for, and of little or no value or worth.  This in turn effects every aspect of that person’s life in some of the following ways:

Mentally:  People learn that they are not safe, that they need to be on guard and protect themselves in order to survive. Their brain's neural networks therefore develop with imbalanced levels of neurohormones. This alters their perception and cognition, distorting their ability to understand themselves, their relationships, and other people and situations.

Emotionally:  People are forced to block, suppress or deny their feelings and create many unhealthy self-defense mechanisms to do so.

Physically:  People often neglect the physical aspect of their lives and are sick often, have weight issues, are frequently exhausted, do not exercise, have problems with sleep and bedtime.

Spiritually:  This includes not only our relationship with God or the Creator, but our morals, ethics and values as well.

I provide counselling to Gingolx Village community members who need help with issues around behaviour, learning, mental health, trauma, abuse, and relationships. I help clients discuss and understand their life experiences and consequently, themselves.

This helps to facilitate a resolution of the psychological consequences of current and past issues - doing this work leads to true and lasting healing.

I have expertise in the role of the brain in cognition, decision-making and behaviour. As we work together, I will help you understand brain development, how the brain changes during both traumatic and positive experiences, and methods of healing and strengthening the brain.
